Thu, 20 Nov 2008 06:17:40 PST-Texas coach Mack Brown insists Will Muschamp's elevation to head-coach-in-waiting doesn't start the tick-tock on the countdown to his retirement. Actually, it does. Not because fans are pushing him out the door, but because any time Muschamp's name is mentioned, it's sure to be followed by "you know, the guy who's been promised Mack Brown's job when he leaves." "When?" just became a perpetual...
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 22:32:15 PST- The faith Texas places in Mack Brown to maintain a winning program was underscored on Nov. 18 when athletic director DeLoss Dodds designated defensive coordinator Will Muschamp as the Longhorns' next coach.
No, Brown, 57, has no desire to retire. He still has eight years on his contract and said he plans to fulfill that obligation.
Texas simply wanted to tie Muschamp, one of the rising young assistants in the profession, to a long-term deal. Apparently, Muschamp, 37, was agreeable to the unusual arrangement, in no small part because his salary will be bumped to $900,000 beginning next year. "We hope (Brown) stays a long time and he will be our coach as long as he wants," Dodds said, "but this assures us that when the time comes, we have the...
Tue, 18 Nov 2008 17:29:37 PST-When Texas hired football coach Mack Brown a decade ago, it was the result of a high-stakes national coaching search to find just the right man to lead one of college football's most prestigious programs. Texas decided it didn't want to go through that again when Brown retires, whenever that day comes.
Sat, 15 Nov 2008 15:04:27 PST-If the Big 12 South title is ultimately decided on who handed Kansas the most lopsided loss, give Texas Tech the nod. The No. 2 Red Raiders crushed the Jayhawks 63-21 while No. 5 Oklahoma beat them 45-31. But No. 4 Texas will not apologize for its 35-7 victory on Saturday no matter what the final BCS rankings might show.
Fri, 14 Nov 2008 00:40:09 PST-He's a proud kid, an undersized quarterback who grew up in Texas and loved his home state Longhorns -- only to be spurned by them. Todd Reesing's also a straightforward kid. He won't deny that getting ready to lead Kansas against the fourth-ranked Longhorns on Saturday is causing his competitive heart to beat a bit faster.
Wed, 12 Nov 2008 19:37:16 PST-Texas center Chris Hall will miss Saturday's game at Kansas after spraining his left knee in practice. Trainer Kenny Boyd said Hall was injured Tuesday, and there was no timetable Wednesday for his return. After the Kansas game, Texas has 11 days off before playing rival Texas A&M on Thanksgiving night.
Mon, 10 Nov 2008 16:38:12 PST-A Texas Longhorns team leader said Monday he approved of the way coaches handled the dismissal of a player who posted a racial slur on his Facebook page about President-elect Barack Obama. Backup center Buck Burnette left No. 4 Texas on Wednesday for what was announced as an unspecified violation of team rules.
Mon, 10 Nov 2008 01:30:39 PST-The Texas Longhorns were inspired after hearing Sanya Richards' firsthand account of her Olympic redemption. After a needed rebound victory over Baylor, the Longhorns gave the game ball to the Texas alum who failed to win gold at Beijing in the individual event she had dominated, but who later ran the anchor lap in the 1,600-meter relay that gave the U.S.
Sat, 08 Nov 2008 14:44:48 PST-Colt McCoy and Quan Cosby spent several late nights together in the Texas training room this week trying to heal their aching bodies. Together on the field Saturday, they helped the No. 5 Longhorns get over the red-and-black blues -- that last-second loss at Texas Tech that knocked them out of the No.
Sat, 08 Nov 2008 12:52:00 PST- Texas was looking to bounce back from a tough loss last week, and the Horns did just that with a 45-21win over...
Sat, 08 Nov 2008 09:23:37 PST-Texas sack leader Brian Orakpo didn't play Saturday in the No. 5 Longhorns' game against Baylor because of a sprained left knee. The defensive end was injured in the 39-33 loss last Saturday at Texas Tech that knocked the Longhorns out of the No. 1 spot in the AP Poll and Bowl Championship Series standings.
